The WBA eliminator clash between top-ranked light heavyweights Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez has been finally set for Saturday, February 3rd. Buatsi (17-0, 3 KOs) and Azeez (20-0, 13 KOs) were set to meet on October 21st at The O2 but a back injury suffered by Azeez in his final training session forced the postponement of their all-British showdown. The rescheduled contest will now take place at The OVO Arena Wembley due to a lack of available dates at The O2. The fight will broadcast live and exclusively on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and Peacock in the USA.
Conor Benn and Peter Dobson square off in the main event at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Saturday, February 3. The contest features undefeated British contender up against unbeaten American welterweight. The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds. Benn won the WBA continental welterweight title in his 13th fight and made several successful defences as he worked his way up the rankings. In his first defence he beat Josef Zahradnik on points, and he backed that up by stopping Jussi Koivula in the second round and Steve Jamoye in the fourth. The 27-year-old Londoner then stepped up the level of opposition and was able to outpoint former world champion Sebastian Formella in November 2020. Benn followed that up by knocking out Samuel Vargas in just 80 seconds in what many thought pre-fight would be his toughest test to day. Peter Dobson has compiled a perfect 16-0 professional record with nine of his wins coming via knockout. Dobson has spent his career fighting on minor boxing cards across the United States and has no notable names on his record. This will be the 33-year-old’s first fight since he beat Rodrigo Damian Coria on points back in June 2022. His last stoppage win came in August 2021 when he knocked out Andres Viera in the fifth round of their six-round bout. The fight will be live on DAZN
In a fight that could seal his fate to become the next face of Mexican boxing superstardom, the undefeated, former World Champion Jaime MunguÃa (42-0, 33 KOs) will battle former Interim World Champion John “The Gorilla†Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) of the U.K. in a 12-round super middleweight clash. The explosive fight night, which is presented in association with Zanfer Boxing and Matchroom Boxing, will take place at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, January 27. In a stunning performance hailed as a Fight of the Year Candidate, Munguia(42-0, 33KOs) defeated the gritty, previous world title contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to earn the WBC silver super middleweight belt in June. MunguÃa, 27, from Mexico who held the WBO Super Welterweight title from 2018 until 2019, made five successful defenses. Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs), who resides in London, England, has not fought since the decision loss to Alvarez on May 7 in Zapopan, Mexico, not far from Alvarez’s home of Guadalajara. Despite being knocked down in round five, Ryder fought back, engaging Alvarez in the center of the ring. The 35-year-old had won his previous four fights since losing by unanimous decision to Callum Smith in November 2019.
Ring, WBA and WBC junior flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji will face WBA mandatory challenger Carlos Canizales at the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan, on January 23. Teraji (22-1, 14 KOs) won the Japanese and OPBF 108-pound titles in his eighth pro fight. Soon afterward, “The Amazing Boy†stepped up to the world scene and claimed the WBC title in May 2017, edging Ganigan Lopez (MD 12). Teraji improved immeasurably with the world title win, making eight defenses against Lopez (KO 2), Milan Melindo (TKO 7), Jonathan Taconing (TKO 4) and Randy Petalcorin (TKO 4). However, overconfidence saw him return from a COVID-19 infection too quickly and he lost his unbeaten record and title to Masamichi Yabuki (TKO 10) in September 2021. Canizales (26-1-1, 19 KOs), The Ring’s No. 7-rated junior flyweight, first caught the eye when he left Venezuela to face WBA titleholder Ryoichi Taguchi (D 12) in December 2016. He returned home and claimed three victories before traveling overseas again and making a name for himself in Asia by defeating Reiya Konisha (UD 12), Bin Lu (TKO 12) and Sho Kimura (UD 12). The 30-year-old was surprisingly stopped by unheralded Esteban Bermudez (TKO 6) but has returned with four wins, notably stopping the now-faded Ganigan Lopez (KO 4) and, most recently, winning a WBA eliminator against Daniel Matellon (TD 8). The fight will be live on ESPN+
