Against The Flow: Shakur Stevenson Faces Joe Cordina Next

Negotiations are underway for a fight between Joe Cordina and Shakur Stevenson on the undercard of the undisputed light-heavyweight title fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol on October 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The 32-year-old Cordina lost for the first time, when he ceded his IBF super-featherweight championship after he was dislodged by Anthony Cacace.

And Shakur Stevenson hasn't been in the good books of many boxing lovers for a while now.

Fans and pundits alike were highly displeased with his poor showing against Edwin De Los Santos in November 2023 ; describing it largely as a snoozefest.

The litany of excuses he tried to cough up didn’t wash.

In a bid to appease the boxing gods, the 27 year old New Jersey native wound up with yet another shambolic outing against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 this year at the Prudential Centre, Newark.

A social media war then erupted between Stevenson and "Tank " Davis.

And just when boxing fans were settling in, anticipating that mega showdown to be finalised, an announcement is made: Shakur Stevenson could be facing Joe Cordina next - against popular expectations.

No disrespect to Cardiff born Cordina who's 17-1 with 9Kos, but boxing fans deserve to see the bouts they so much yearn for: not paying to see a boxer turned diva doing anything possible to protect that "0".

Well, in other news, Cordina is expected to announce his new trainer soon after splitting with Tony Sims.

Moving up in weight to face Stevenson, coupled with getting used to a new trainer: these are factors that could marshal against Cordina. But the Welshman is a bona-fide warrior at heart and should put up a brave show come fight night.
