Russian light heavyweight champion, Dmitry Bivol is convinced that Canelo Alvarez is deliberately trying to avoid a potential rematch.
Bivol firmly believes that Alvarez never had any genuine intentions of pursuing a rematch, citing the Mexican boxing superstar's stubborn negotiation tactics as evidence. Bivol had successfully defended his WBA 175-pound belt against Alvarez last year. Despite Alvarez repeatedly expressing his interest in a rematch, Bivol feels that his opponent's actions suggest otherwise.
Recently, Bivol's manager, Vadim Kornilov, spoke to ESPN and revealed that the rematch is in jeopardy due to Alvarez's insistence on the same terms as their initial fight. Kornilov finds this stance unacceptable and believes it demonstrates Alvarez's lack of genuine interest in a rematch.
"They don’t want a rematch. They know that they lost very badly in the first fight and that they have less chances of winning in the second. When did you hear of a fighter who, after losing, asked for a rematch on the same terms?" Kornilov said.
In a recent interview, Bivol made it clear that he firmly believes Alvarez simply does not want the rematch. He stated that he does not see it as disrespectful towards him, but rather as Alvarez's way of indicating that he is not interested in the fight. Bivol sees Alvarez's demand for the same terms as an excuse, suggesting that he is searching for reasons to avoid the rematch. Bivol highlighted that it is highly unusual for a fighter to request the same terms for a rematch, emphasizing that Alvarez's intentions seem dubious.
"I think it’s not disrespectful to me, it’s just that [demanding the same terms as the first fight is] some way for him to say that ‘he didn’t agree to this fight. You know, it’s some excuses for him. It’s fine. He just wants to find some excuses for him[self]. Of course nobody says I want the same terms on the rematch. He just doesn’t want it (the fight), if he wants to say ‘I want same terms.’ You agree or no?"
"I could say, you know, I want a fight with [heavyweight Anthony] Joshua and next [Tyson] Fury, but I want the fight on Mars. Let’s do it. Do you agree to fight with me on Mars?"
