With the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games drawing closer, Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, has entered the final and most crucial stage of its preparations after departing for a high-performance training camp in Ireland.
The overseas camp will serve as the final opportunity for the team to sharpen tactics, improve conditioning and fine-tune preparations before travelling to Scotland, where Ghana hopes to deliver one of the greatest boxing performances in the country’s Commonwealth Games history.
The Ireland camp comes after an intensive three-month residential training programme at the Winneba Sports College, where the Black Bombers have been based since April. The extended period in camp allowed the technical team to develop a strong foundation, combining experienced international competitors with emerging talents who earned recognition during the National Individual Championships held earlier this year.
Months of disciplined training have increased confidence within the squad, with the team showing promising signs ahead of the Games. A major boost came in May when the Black Bombers impressed during a preparatory tournament against Nigeria, giving the coaching staff further belief that the team has the quality and depth to compete for medals on the Commonwealth stage.
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has made its ambitions clear, setting an historic target of three gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals. Achieving that goal would mark Ghana’s best-ever boxing medal performance at the Commonwealth Games and further strengthen the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s boxing powerhouses.
Leading Ghana’s men’s team is experienced captain Abdul Wahid Omar, who will compete in the 65kg division. Omar’s international experience and leadership qualities will be vital as the Black Bombers aim to handle the pressure of a major global competition.
He will be joined by Amadu Mohammed (55kg), Ebenezer Ankrah (60kg), Desmond Pappoe (80kg), Precious Akai Nettey (70kg), Jibril Muntari (90kg) and Daniel Plange (+90kg), giving Ghana representation across a wide range of weight categories.
The women’s team will also be looking to make a strong impression, with Ramatu Quaye (51kg), Nancy Banfo (54kg) and Adelaide Djabatey (57kg) carrying Ghana’s hopes in the women’s divisions. Their participation highlights the continued growth and development of women’s boxing in the country.
Guiding the team through the final preparations is veteran head coach Dr. Ofori Asare, one of Ghana’s most respected amateur boxing coaches. The experienced trainer sees the Ireland camp as a key stage in preparing the boxers for the demands of elite international competition, focusing on tactical adjustments, weight management, reaction speed and overall ring readiness.
Ghana’s boxing history at the Commonwealth Games is filled with memorable achievements, with the sport remaining the country’s most successful medal-producing discipline at the event. From past champions to modern-day contenders, the Black Bombers carry the responsibility of continuing that proud tradition.
As the final preparations continue in Ireland, expectations are high that this generation of Black Bombers can create history in Glasgow. With months of hard work behind them and a clear medal ambition ahead, Ghana’s boxers are determined to make their mark and possibly deliver the country’s biggest Commonwealth Games boxing success ever.
