Los Angeles, United States — Vasiliy Lomachenko begs to differ on the subject of Devin Haney being the next Mayweather and is more than ever ready to echo his voice in the ears of the many boxing fans who believe Haney cherry-picking by fighting a much older bloke who is grown past his peak.
Ukraine's Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) met American undisputed lightweight champion Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) face-to-face for the first time on Thursday ahead of their May 20th clash which broadcasts live on ESPN+ PPV.
Haney, who is 24 years old, appeared significantly larger than Lomachenko with his welterweight-sized physique. It's difficult to imagine the two fighters competing against each other due to the apparent size difference, which seemed to be around 3 to 4 weight divisions.
Speaking about the upcoming bout, Lomacheko who recently returned to the ring after taking a stand to defend his home country expressed his excitement ahead of the fight.
"Yes, yes, yes, because it’s too close and I’ll be honest with you, it’s the last chance for me to be undisputed world champion. That’s why it’s very important... This chance is the biggest moment in my professional career. This chance, this fight. I don’t want to talk about the future. We don’t know the result," Lomacheko said.
When asked if he shared the same views as boxing fans who believe Haney is the next Mayweather, Lomachenko replied in the negative.
"Maybe, I don’t know. For me, not, but somebody, maybe, yes," he stated.
Vasiliy Lomachenko returned from his hiatus to defeat Jamaine Ortiz in October last year with a 12-round unanimous decision. Around the same time, Haney defended his IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO title against George Kambosos.
