Eddie Hearn believes that the toughest fight for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in the 168lb division is no other than fast-rising knockout artist, David Morrell.
Contrary to popular belief, Hearn asserts that David Morrell Jr, not David Benavidez, poses the greatest challenge for Canelo. Hearn holds Morrell, with an impressive record of 9-0 and 8 knockouts, in high regard and firmly believes that Morrell would emerge victorious in a bout against Benavidez.
Canelo recently signed a three-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), with his first fight scheduled against Jermall Charlo on September 16th. If all goes well, the subsequent two fights could potentially involve Errol Spence and David Benavidez, provided Benavidez distinguishes himself as a worthy contender. This places Benavidez in a precarious position, as he must gather his courage and take on Morrell in a high-stakes gamble to prove himself as the best option for Canelo at 168 pounds.
In Hearn's view, Morrell presents the toughest challenge for Canelo among the fighters in the division. He perceives Morrell as an extraordinarily skilled fighter, highlighting his successful amateur career as supporting evidence. The ultimate outcome at 168 pounds remains uncertain, and it is hoped that Benavidez does not shy away from facing Morrell, as this would inadvertently grant the Cuban fighter the top spot in the division through default.
"There’s talk of a Morrell fight. I don’t believe in a million years that Benavidez will be fighting Morrell. If he does, oh. Yeah, this year. If he does, because the guy [Morrell] is 9-0, and he’s very good... I rate David Benavidez. I think he’s a great fighter, but Morrell is a very, very, very good fighter. I’m not even thinking about a Morrell-Canelo fight because that’s not even been discussed. So if you play out everybody in the division, maybe Morrell is Canelo’s toughest fight," Hearn said in parts.
