Their first fight, aside being a big money bout with global interest and massive appeal, wasn't really as exciting as many anticipated.
But, well, a rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao — which is an even more expired idea than their long-delayed first fight from 2015, at least in a sporting sense — is “being explored” for 2026, according to Mike Coppinger.
Mayweather will turn 49 in February and hasn’t had a sanctioned bout since his 2017 win over Conor McGregor, and the last time he faced an actual professional boxer in a sanctioned bout came in September 2015, beating Andre Berto four months after his long-anticipated fight with Pacquiao, which of course Mayweather also won.
Still 50-0 (27 KO), Mayweather would be potentially risking the undefeated record he’s been so proud of for so many years, but the money truly might be worth it.
Pacquiao, who will turn 47 in December, broke a four-year retirement and fought to a draw with WBC titleholder Mario Barrios this past July. It’s been expected that Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KO) will fight again in January, possibly against WBA titlist Rolly Romero, but if there’s mega-money on offer for Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2, that idea could be scrapped.
A rematch between Floyd and Manny, if it were a sanctioned bout and not an exhibition, would be most marketable with Pacquiao coming off of a win in January, but it would also be more marketable as things stand now than if he were to fight again in January and lose. And there’s no legitimate purpose to Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 at this point other than marketing any money; even if the fight is sanctioned, it would have no legitimate impact on either man’s legacy, as they are both middle-aged men long past their sporting primes.
Netflix would be the broadcast home for the rematch, if it does come to pass.
Of course majority of people would tune in, the build up would be crazy; but it’s more of a money grab than anything else.
