Former Cruiserweight Champion Mairis Briedis Announces Retirement

Former unified cruiserweight champion hailing from Riga, Latvia, Mairis Briedis has decided to say goodbye to the sport he loves most. 

After an exceptional 25-year career, the three-time cruiserweight world champion and first Latvian to hold a boxing world title has announced his retirement. 

Making his debut in October 2009, Briedis is known for his impressive victories, including winning the IBF, WBC and WBO World titles, Briedis also gave Oleksandr Usyk one of his toughest fights. His last bout was a rematch for the IBF title against Jai Opetaia in May, where he came up short via unanimous decision. 

 He had previously fought against the same opponent in 2022 ; losing via the same unanimous verdict. 

 Briedis has wins over the likes of Marco Hulk, Yuniel Dorticos, Krzysztof Glowacki, Mike Perez, Mahmoud Charr among others. 

Nicknamed the " Latvian Punisher ", Briedis was also a decorated kickboxer.

 In 2017, he was awarded with " The Order Of The Three Stars ".

Reflecting on his journey, Briedis 39, with a record of 28-3, 20 Kos, expressed gratitude for the support and unforgettable moments. 

 " Boxing wasn't just a career - it was a life filled with passion, emotions and dreams. But it's time to say goodbye to the ring and open a new chapter in my life ", a portion from his statement read.
