Jermell Charlo has crowned decorated American knockout artist, Gervonta "Tank" Davis as the current leading force and face boxing.
The undisputed 154-pound champion from Houston, Texas, praised the southpaw fighter from Baltimore, referring to him as the "face of boxing" in a recent interview. While the title of the "face of boxing" has been a topic of intense debate, often associated with Canelo Alvarez due to his achievements and commercial success, Charlo firmly believes that Davis has emerged as the true face of the sport.
"America’s got the best fighters in the world in the last few years. Our GOAT (Greatest of All Time) was [Muhammad] Ali. Our now GOAT is [Floyd] Mayweather. How do you beat them? Our era’s different. I think, truly, right now, though, the face of boxing gotta be, probably, Gervonta Davis, to me. Right now, if you think about who really conquered the new world, selling out every fight, he performing well. Everybody wants to stay focused on the negativity, but he’s grinding his ass off."
Davis, at the age of 28, gained substantial attention with his impressive victory over Ryan Garcia in April. The fight, held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, drew a capacity crowd. Davis secured a stunning win by delivering a devastating body shot in the seventh round of their 136-pound bout. The fight reportedly generated over one million pay-per-view buys, marking Davis's sixth consecutive time headlining a pay-per-view event. His popularity as a draw in various cities across the United States is unquestionable.
Davis is currently serving a jail sentence for violating the terms of his house arrest. This violation stems from a hit-and-run incident in 2020, resulting in injuries to four individuals. Despite his current situation, Davis's popularity and success in the boxing world cannot be disregarded.
