San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic — Hector Luis Garcia, 31, might have missed the chance to step into the spotlight by suffering a round 9 TKO defeat to the hard-hitting Gervonta Davis but all is not lost for Garcia in 2023.
Hector Garcia (16-1, 10KOs, 1KO) has been ordered by the WBA to defend his WBA junior lightweight title against the United State's #3 featherweight fighter, Lamont Roach (23-1-1, 9KOs).
"The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee has notified Dominican Hector Garcia, current Super Featherweight champion, that his mandatory opponent is American Lamont Roach, currently ranked number one in the WBA rankings, on Monday, March 20," a formal letter (as reported by BoxingScene.com) sent to the two boxers read.
Gervonta Davis took on Hector Garcia as a tune-up fight ahead of his much-anticipated clash with undefeated boxing star, Ryan Garcia which is scheduled for April 22 at the T-Mobile Arena. Hector Garcia put up a good fight but ultimately, his team decided it was in his best interest to end the fight just as the bell went rang for round 9.
The two are expected to send in a signed contract by April 19. The WBA also ordered a purse split of 72/25 with 75% going to the champion and 25% to the mandatory challenger.
"Both parties have 30 days to negotiate and send the contracts to the WBA Championships Committee before April 19, 2023... Should any of the parties express their unwillingness to negotiate, the Championships Committee will call for an auction, the percentage of which will be divided as follows: 75% for the champion and 25% for the mandatory challenger."
