Maryland, United States — Gervonta 'Tank' Davis has declared himself the current "face of boxing" in place of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez as he assumes Alvarez is already hitting retirement soon and he is stepping into his shoes already.
"It’s big. Canelo is one of the top fighters in the sport, and he’s a great fighter himself. Him calling me his favorite fighter is pretty touching. I think I’m the face of boxing already if we’re being real. I think Canelo is going out the door. Canelo is probably the only one, but he’s going out the door," Tank said.
"Every time I’m in there, I put in a dominant performance. I think going out there every time and putting on a great performance. I think that’s what makes me the star over everybody. People be winning, but first of all, they go twelve rounds. I’m not saying twelve rounds is bad, but it’s how they do it. They’re running, and they still think it’s amateur boxing. They [fans] want the whole package."
Despite having an undefeated record and the WBA world 'regular' lightweight title, it's hard to see Tank Davis (28-0, 26KOs) as the new face of boxing.
Many analysts have argued that Tank is yet to face any real opponent like Devin Haney (29-0, 15KOs) or any other top dog in the division, hence giving him the bragging right as the face of boxing is like covering a big jar with a small lid. Most of the fighters he has defeated so far are at the non-elite level and his current records are far from the iconic dream he is having.
Diving into his resume, his top wins can be numbered 3 so far. The fight with and Leo Santa Cruz(38-2-1, 19KOs), Rolly Romero(14-1, 12KOs) and Hugo Ruiz (39-5, 33KOS). It is obvious the American is overhyping his achievement but the reality of being on top could be achieved if he challenges the good ones. The likes of Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Regis Prograis, and more.
With a clash with Ryan Garcia ahead, Davis should focus on making a statement against Garcia and take on other elite boxers before claiming the crown.
