Jermall Charlo is aiming to take on undisputed super middleweight champion, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May of next year during Cinco De Mayo.
Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is scheduled to take on David Benavidez's junior brother, Jose Benavidez (28-2-1. 19 KOs) in his first fight after more than 2 years on the undercard of the Benevidez-Andrade event this Saturday at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Charlo's last appearance in the ring came in June of 2021 where he successfully defended his WBC title against Juan Macias Montiel in Houston.
Speaking about his next fight after Benavidez Jr. Charlo expressed his willingness to take on David Benavidez, Andrade, Plant or Canelo Alvarez.
"I’m down to fight either one of them [David Benavidez or Demetrius Andrade] win, lose, or draw. I’m down to fight Caleb Plant. I’m down to fight Canelo too. At 168, the door is still wide open for me. I was originally going to fight Canelo. I got the offer, I got the call, but it was something that my brother had talked about," he told the media.
"At that time, I wasn’t mentally ready or prepared to even make my transition back into boxing. So why not let my brother seize the moment, and that’s exactly what he did."
Jermell Charlo jumped two weight classes for a short at Canelo's undisputed crown in September of this year but ultimately lost by a unanimous decision in what many called his worst performance ever.
Now with his return, Jermall Charlo is hoping that he gets another opportunity to face Canelo and this time he is really ready to fight.
"I haven’t been told anything otherwise besides that. I hope we get him [Canelo] on Cinco de Mayo. I look good in this fight [with Jose Benavidez Jr], and you guys press the action. The media and you guys vouch for me to fight that fight [with Canelo]."
