Jermell Charlo will return to the boxing ring after a 16-month hiatus to face Canelo Alvarez in a super middleweight matchup on September 30. Despite suffering from a broken hand, Charlo is confident that he is ready to defeat Canelo when they clash.
Initially scheduled to take on mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu on January 28, Charlo had to postpone the fight due to a broken left hand suffered during training camp in December. However, he reassured fans that the injury won't be an issue during the upcoming clash against the four-division titlist Alvarez, demonstrating confidence in his recovery and readiness to compete.
"The hand is great. You don't have to worry about the hand. The hand is going to be great and it's going to be in action come September 30. The hand is good and it's going to be down and ready for the 30th," Charlo said on Showtime.
Looking beyond this bout, Charlo aims to cement his legacy by becoming only the third fighter in the four-belt era to achieve undisputed champion status in two weight classes, joining the ranks of Terence Crawford and Claressa Shields. Eager to make history and inspire future generations, Charlo is determined to seize the opportunity and work diligently towards his goal.
"I made history before, so it feels good and I know that feeling, and that urge and that hunger to want to make history and do something that children talk about. That's the dream. It's beyond the dream because some people can barely get to undisputed. But I came to the point where I can become undisputed in two weight divisions. I have to seize that moment and opportunity. I'm going to train hard, work hard. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to rock and roll."
The highly-anticipated showdown between Charlo and Alvarez will be the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view card in Las Vegas. While the venue remains undisclosed at this point, fight fans are eagerly awaiting the clash between these two undisputed champions.
