John Ryder Aims to Upset Canelo Alvarez In His Hometown

John Ryder is confident in his ability and plans to upset Saul "Canelo" Alvarez this Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico, when Canelo returns to his hometown for the first time in 12 years.

Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) believes he is going to have the upper hand over Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) in their highly anticipated undisputed super middleweight clash which is going to air live on DAZN at 8:00 pm ET.

If Ryder can push Canelo hard in the first four rounds, he may tire and struggle to keep up with Ryder for the remaining eight rounds, as evidenced in his recent fights against Gennadiy Golovkin and Dmitry Bivol. A win over Canelo would make Ryder a champion and set him up for a lucrative rematch.

While fighting in Canelo's backyard presents a challenge, Ryder aims to put on an impressive performance to ensure that the judges cannot deny him a victory. Some have criticized Canelo's past fight outcomes as being influenced by favorable judging, and Ryder hopes to avoid any controversy in this fight.

Ryder and his team have worked tirelessly for this moment, leaving no stone unturned in their training camp. They have made a change of scenery in the last week, focusing intently on their preparations. Ryder believes that mentally and physically, he is in the best shape of his life, and he plans to bring all of his experience and knowledge into the ring with him.

"For this camp, we’ve left no stone unturned. We’ve done everything right so far. In this last week of camp, we have had a change of scenery. Just really focused as a team. This is the time I’ve dreamed about. I’ve worked hard, kept my head down, and I’m finally here. I just got to embrace it. No one has ever given up on me, and I’m not going to give up on myself," he told Matchroom Boxing.

"The majority of the hard work is done. A couple of hard spars left. I want to show them that you can achieve your dreams. I feel like I’m the best version of myself coming into this fight. I feel like, mentally & physically, I’m in the best condition I’ve ever been. Everything I’ve picked up along the way, I’m taking it into the ring with me on May 6th. If I win this fight, I’ve absolutely changed the life of me and my family. This is what I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid, and coming into this sport when times have gotten bad, I didn’t think it would happen," he added.
