Ghana-based Nigerian pugilist Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab reckons his encounter on the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk bill as a " Date With Destiny ".
The Lagos native, who relocated to Accra, Ghana in 2013 faces 25 year old Mark Chamberlain ( 15-0, 11Kos) for the WBC Silver Lightweight Championship.
Joshua ( not quite related to Anthony Joshua) has a story of perseverance and dedication.
Upon arrival in Ghana, the young lad pitched camp at The Charles Quartey Boxing Gym in the heart of Accra under the eagle eye of former Ghanaian Heavyweight now trainer, Charles Quartey, who played the dual role of trainer and manager in the nascent stages.
By dint of sheer assiduity and tenacious passion, Joshua nicknamed " Wealth Machine " garnered hard wins against formidable foes in gruelling contests that made him the cynosure of all eyes.
Among the vanquished in his path are Abraham Osei Bonsu, Michael Ansah, Michael Pappoe and Bright Ayala.
He was subsequently spotted by Michael Amoo Bediako, the man who led Richard Commey to win the IBF Lightweight Championship.
Bediako signed Joshua to his Streetwise Boxing Management; a deal which saw Wahab clinch the WBO Africa Super Featherweight strap against Jackson Malinyingi on Christmas Day 2021 at the La Palm Royal Beach Resort in Accra, Ghana.
That bill, put up by ACE Power Boxing Promotions somewhat heralded Wahab into continental, if not global spotlight, as ring announcer Samuel Opoku Amoah boomed in baritone:" The New Champ".
Despite suffering the first loss of his professional career: a controversial majority decision to Liam Dillon at the York Hall, Bethnal Green in September 2022, Joshua (23-1, 16Kos) was unfazed.
He came back with an 11th round knockout of Sikiru Shogbesan leading to this title shot against Chamberlain.
A very confident Joshua claims victory cannot elude him and that he would go all out to annex the belt, even so, on such a mammoth platform.
But Chamberlain, the undefeated southpaw from Portsmouth might have other plans.
Nicknamed "Thunder ", the hard-hitting Brit has 11 knockouts in 15 bouts : six of them in round one.
Mark Chamberlain might be looking to finish it early, but the sturdy and resolute African warrior in Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab should never be underestimated.
Trainer Charles Quartey, whose team consists of military officer Bernard Tetteh Nartey and Ernest Ofori has conditioned Wahab to explode right from the opening bell, and expects nothing but a dominant win.
A combustible duel awaits us tomorrow night as Ghana, Nigeria and Africa as a whole root behind Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab to bring the continent glory.
