Australian boxer George Kambosos Jr is set to return to the ring in July, taking on IBO champion Maxi Hughes following his two consecutive defeats to Devin Haney.
Kambosos shocked the boxing world by winning the unified lightweight titles in 2021, defeating Teofimo Lopez, but was unsuccessful in his attempts to become the first undisputed lightweight champion of the four-belt era against Haney. Meanwhile, Hughes has found success in the lightweight division, winning the British and IBO world titles and is currently on a seven-fight win streak, defeating former featherweight world champion Kid Galahad in his most recent fight.
The pair are set to meet in an eliminator for the IBF title, with the winner moving into the #2 spot in the IBF rankings. Kambosos, who is currently ranked seventh, is looking to make a statement with a victory over Hughes, who is ranked eighth. Although the date of the fight is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to take place in Las Vegas and will be available to watch on ESPN for those in the United States. No UK broadcaster has been confirmed as of yet.
In a recent interview with Fight Hype, Kambosos expressed his focus on his upcoming opponent, stating that he is motivated to bounce back from his defeat and show that he is not finished. He revealed his intention to make a statement with a victory over Hughes, stating, "Just cause I took a loss to one guy, doesn’t mean that all of a sudden I’m done, I’m finished."
Kambosos is looking to regain momentum in his boxing career following his losses to Haney and continue to make a name for himself in the sport. Hughes, on the other hand, is looking to build on his recent success and prove that he is a worthy contender in the lightweight division.
Overall, the upcoming fight between Kambosos and Hughes is set to be an exciting and highly-anticipated clash between two talented boxers. Both fighters have a lot to prove and will be looking to make a statement with a victory. Fans of the sport will undoubtedly be tuning in to see who comes out on top.
