Sergio 'Yoreme' Mendoza is gradually proving that he is a force to reckon with as he pulls off yet another outstanding performance with a KO of Jose Javier Torres.
On Friday night, Mendoza remained undefeated as he delivered a dominant performance against Jose Javier Torres, scoring two knockdowns and ultimately forcing a stoppage in the sixth round. The fight took place at the Polideportivo Juan S. Millan in Culiacan, Mexico, Torres' hometown.
With this victory, Mendoza's professional record now stands at an impressive 19 wins with no losses, including 17 knockout victories.
Right from the start, Mendoza showcased his skills by effectively fighting from a distance. His punches were precise and accurate, landing powerful combinations to Torres' head.
In the third round, Mendoza delivered a devastating counter left hook that significantly hurt Torres. The impact was so strong that Torres needed a standing eight-count to recover. To his credit, Torres displayed resilience and continued to fight, attempting to overcome Mendoza's reach advantage.
As the fight progressed, Mendoza sensed Torres' weakening and fatigue. In the fifth round, he escalated his punch output and aggression, sitting down on his punches and forcing Torres into a defensive posture, despite his efforts to fight back.
Mendoza's relentless assault eventually took its toll on Torres, leading to a barrage of punches that sent him to the canvas. Although Torres managed to beat the count and resume the fight, a subsequent combination to the head by Mendoza prompted the referee to intervene and halt the bout.
Prior to this fight, the 23-year-old Mendoza's most recent bout was on December 10, where he secured a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Cruz.
As for Torres, his record now stands at 15 wins and 3 losses, with 9 knockouts. Despite his defeat, it's worth noting that Torres had faced tougher opposition than Mendoza, including a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Valledares in August 2021, who later went on to win a world title belt at 105 pounds.
In the co-feature bout, featherweight prospect Hector Escobar of Los Angeles demonstrated his power and skill by scoring three knockdowns against Axel Ahumada, ultimately securing a knockout victory in the second round. Escobar's professional record now stands at an impressive 18 wins, 1 no contest, and 15 knockouts. He has impressively won his last five fights by knockout.
Ahumada, residing in Los Mochis, Mexico, suffered the defeat, leaving his record at 7 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw, with 6 knockouts.
In the flyweight division, Yoali Mosqueda from Mexico extended his undefeated streak to 7 wins, with 5 knockouts, by stopping Adrian Ibarra from Guadalajara in the third round. Ibarra's record now stands at 5 wins, 2 losses, and 3 knockouts.
In another bout, junior bantamweight Alexis Silva from Tepic, Mexico, secured a unanimous decision victory over Juan Carlos Franco from Nogales, Mexico. Silva's professional record improved to 6 wins, 1 loss, and 2 knockouts, while Franco's record now stands at 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 2 knockouts.
In the lightweight division, Manuel Medina Barrera from Zapopan, Mexico, emerged victorious with a record of 5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, including 3 knockouts, as he stopped Ariel Salazar from Mazatlan at 2 minutes and 25 seconds of the fourth round. Salazar's record now stands at 5 wins, 1 loss, and 2 knockouts.
