Keith Thurman believes that the forthcoming welterweight championship fight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. will serve as a defining moment for boxing in this current generation.
Set to take place on July 29 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, this highly-anticipated bout aims to determine the undisputed champion in the 147-pound division.
Thurman, who is a former titleholder in the 147-pound division, believes that whoever comes out victorious will not only lay claim to the undisputed championship but also attain a level of recognition that surpasses even the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr., widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of the past two decades.
In an interview with FightHubTV, Thurman voiced his thoughts on the Spence-Crawford matchup, underscoring the significance of two undefeated champions competing for the unification of an entire division. He emphasized that this accomplishment, something Mayweather never achieved, is crucial for the current generation of boxers to elevate their status in the sport. While both Spence and Crawford are widely considered as future Hall of Famers, the outcome of their showdown will determine whose legacy will be adorned with a few more accolades on their plaque.
"These are two undefeated champions. The real thing is that Thurman was not supposed to slip up in 2019. If I was an undefeated champion, we would’ve been unified titles together. Two champions of this caliber, undefeated, going to unify the entire division, doing something unprecedented, something that Floyd Mayweather never accomplished in his career," he said.
"This is what our generation needs. They need that to gain the status. They’re both future Hall of Famers. But somebody’s just gonna have a few more words to say on their plaque at the end of the day. That’s what fighting is all about."
