State of New Jersey Honours Ghanaian Former World Champion Richard Commey

 

 

Ghanaian boxer and former lightweight champion, Richard Commey has been honoured in the US for his distinguished career in the sport of boxing.

 

On February, 18, 2025, Richard Commey currently resident in New Jersey, USA received the letter conferring the special honour on him from the “City of Union City, Mayor and State Senator Brian P. Stack and Board of Commissioners” signed by Commissioner, Lucio Fernandez.

 

Accordingly, the “State of New Jersey Senate Citation” was presented to Richard Commey during the Black History Month Ceremony held on Friday, 28, 2025 at the William V. Musto, Cultural Centre, Union City in New Jersey.

 

“We congratulate you on your distinguished athletic career. We do it with the highest esteem and respect,” said Commissioner, Lucio Fernandez of the City of Union City.

 

Deeply humbled to receive the recognition, Richard Commey said: ” It’s a great honour to be acknowledged for his work in the United States. This is a great boost for my boxing career”.

 

Born on March 10, 1987, Richard Commey held the IBF lightweight title in 2019.He also boasts multiple titles: The Ghanaian lightweight title, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Continental Africa lightweight title, African Boxing Union (ABU) lightweight title, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental lightweight title and Commonwealth lightweight title from 2014 to 2015.

 Commey was expected to stage a much awaited ring return in February but it didn't materialise.
